When a laceration, puncture, or lesion disrupts the structural integrity of your skin, your body responds by quickly creating new tissue to repair that damage. With most types of scarring, this new tissue, called collagen, remains within the boundaries of the wound.
Keloid scarring, however, develops when collagen fibers extend beyond the borders of the wound. Keloids are most common on the shoulders, chest, and cheeks but can appear in other areas.
Acne scars develop as your body creates collagen to knit together skin broken by acne lesions. Some acne scars are sunken, sitting below the surface of the surrounding skin. Others are raised and appear as lumps or “knobs” of skin and are often lighter or darker than the rest of your skin.
Kenalog is a corticosteroid medication that reduces inflammation and redness. When injected into scar tissue, Kenalog helps flatten the tissue, making the scar less noticeable.
Kenalog injections also shrink the overall size of the scar. Patients often report a reduction in itching and tenderness. In some cases, the medication can even lighten the color of scar tissue.
It usually takes a series of injections to achieve optimal results. During your initial consultation, your practitioner will advise you on how many Kenalog injections you’ll need to reach your goals.
Be sure to let your practitioner know about the medications you take and any health conditions you’ve been diagnosed with. While Kenalog injections are a good fit for most patients, there are cases in which a different approach might be best.
When you arrive for your treatment, you will sit or lie on the treatment chair or table. Your practitioner cleanses the treatment area before injecting the medication into the targeted scar tissue.
After the injection, you might feel a stinging or burning sensation for a short while. An ice pack can reduce these sensations. Your practitioner applies a small bandage to the area, and you can resume normal activities immediately afterward
